This is a very nice quality English bowler hat made by Lyons London and marketed as “The King Hat”. A bowler is called a derby in the United States, but basically they are the same type of hat. The hat is made in a classic bowler/derby form with turned rim lined in grosgrain. The crown has a black grosgrain ribbon around it base. It is lined in green coloured satin that is printed in gold and red with the Royal Coat of Arms and with “The King Hat Extra High Class Lightweight Mfd by Lyons London Made in England”. I assume that the Royal Coat of Arms signifies that Lyons held a Royal Warrant. The sweatband is gold stamped “The King Hat Trademark Regd Made in England” along with medals, I assume won for the quality of their hats. The sweatband is also stamped “Felt Hat All Fur Made in England” and has its original size label affixed to it, which reads “The King 7”. There is also a guarantee label affixed under the sweatband. The opening measures 21 7/8” around the sweatband and 6 3/4” by 7 3/4” across the opening. It is in very good condition with no wear, tear or soiling - the grosgrain band around the crown is wrinkled on one side and would need to be pressed flat, but otherwise, this has been very well cared for over the years. The hat is difficult to date precisely, but I think that it dates to the 1920s
This is a wonderful English bowler from a quality London hatter - very natty!
