This is a handbag purse or pocketbook dating to the 1890s. The purse is made with a pebble textured brown leather exterior and lined with an ochre coloured smooth leather. It has silver toned metal hardware with a sliding clasp closure. It has an exterior pocket built onto the front. The carrying handle is made of an intertwined rope-like structured leather. It has one pocket built into the interior side. The purse is constructed so that it extends slightly in width as it is filled with items. It measures 7 1/4” in width, 5 5/8” in height and has a depth of 1 1/4” at the bottom, which expands out to 4 1/2”. The handle has a drop of 3 1/2”. It is small by today's standard, but ladies carried only necessities during the Victorian era. It is in very good condition, quite amazing given its age, with very slight scuffing or marking - I’ve had Victorian era purses in the past, but they were not in nice shape, but this one looks to have seen little use and was well stored over the last 120+ years. Wonderful Victorian era handbag, rarely seen, especially in this close to pristine condition!
