This is an antique Victorian era vest made in the “Zouave” style - the Zouaves were indigenous Algerians who served in the French army and were known their short open-fronted jackets. This jacket is quite gorgeous, made of black panne velvet and decorated with embroidered roped detailing and rickrack - see the close-up photos of the interior for an appreciation of the work. The piece is lined and hand finished.
