This is an exceptional 1950s era handbag purse made in a box form by Fernande Desgranges. Fernande Desgranges was a designer who retailed his designs from boutiques located in Geneva, Switzerland as well as Paris and Nice, France. He was active from the 1930s until 1967 and produced coats, dresses, jewelry and handbags. His was a luxury brand to rival many of the high-end fashion brands of the 1940s through to the 1960s. This purse has a black lizard skin exterior and black leather interior. It has a pivoting clasp with hinged brass metal and leather pulls. The purse pulls open from either side, with a brass metal frame supporting the middle. It has a lizard covered handle, beautifully constructed to withstand the wear of constant gripping. It has an expandable pocket built onto one side with a snap closure compartment built onto the pocket. The other interior side has a zippered pocket. The interior is gold stamped “Fernande Desgranges Geneve Paris Nice Made in France Déposé”. It has two brass metal plaques affixed to the underside to protect the skin from wear by surface contact. The purse measures 8 7/8” in width, by 4” in depth at the bottom and 6” in height, exclusive of the handle - the handle has a “fall” of 4”. The purse is in very good condition with no wear except for light scratching to the hardware, mostly to the plaques on the underside, normal, due to surface contact. There is a bit of verdigris on the gold stamping of the maker’s name, but you should be able to clean this off if desired - very minor issue. There is a bit of wear to the black finish on the bottom edge of the front and back panels, could be touched up, but really of no consequence (see last close-up photo). Otherwise, this purse is very clean and looks to have seen very little use - a beautiful example of a high end purse. This bag smacks of quality - obvious attention to detail in every way. Classic bag, wonderful addition to a purse collection - Desgranges purses are highly sought after!
