This is a wonderful vintage ladies’ black velvet “cocoon” coat dating to the 1980s, but taking inspiration for its form from the Art Nouveau era designs of Erté. The coat is made with dramatic batwing sleeves that create a wide upper silhouette that narrows below the hips. The back has a pleat that runs the entire height of the coat, widening as it moves down the coat. The pleat is decorated with a printed metallic gold geometric design and the cuffs and pockets are similarly trimmed. The coat has a V shaped neckline and closes with three velvet covered buttons down the lower front. It is fully lined in black rayon fabric.
Label: None, most likely made by a professional seamstress, perhaps a costume designer
Fabric: Cotton velvet in a medium weight
Sizing: No size is indicated, but this should fit an extra large to an XXL size. Due to the cut of the coat, it is extremely difficult to measure, but please note the following measurements, taking the style of the coat into account:
Shoulders: 18” across the shoulder pads
Sleeves: 28 1/2” long from the neck opening to the cuff
Bust: Full, due to the cut of the batwing sleeves
Hips: 60”, meant to fall loosely
Overall length: 51" would work best on a taller woman, unless a shorter woman prefers a full length.
Condition: It is in very good condition with no wear, tear, staining, soiling or other defect. This robe looks to have seen little use and has been well stored over the years.
This is quite the dramatic piece - wonderful to wear out to the opera or other formal event!
