This is an excellent quality 100% pure cashmere sweater made in Scotland by Pringle for Herd & Walker of London. It is difficult to find anything out about Herd & Walker other than that the business was dissolved in 1966. Pringle, of course, is a famous knitted goods manufacturer, renowned for their quality cashmere. This sweater is made in a pullover style and has a small rounded collar that closes at the neck with a button and loop, which forms a “peek-a-boo” neckline. The body is hand knit with an “intarsia” ribbon pattern and the cashmere is of a medium weight. It has long sleeves. The cuffs and bottom have a elasticized ribbing. I believe that the sweater dates to the 1950s. Label: Made by Pringle of Scotland For Herd & Walker Piccadilly. W.I.”. Content label reads “Intarsia by Pringle Inlaid by Hand Made in Scotland 100% Pure Cashmere”. Sizing: No size is indicated, and although this should fit a medium to large size depending on preference for tightness of fit, please rely on the following measurements for fit - note that the shoulder seams fit off of the shoulder on my mannequin, so sleeve length would be affected by shoulder fit: Shoulders: 18 1/2” across Sleeves: 21” Sleeve inseam: 16” Bust: 44” around, taken under the arms, unstretched Bottom: 22” around, unstretched - stretches out to 30” max Overall length: 22”, measured flat Condition: It is in very good condition with the exception of two small holes one at the back interior neck (see close-up photo of label), easily repaired and not visible when the sweater is being worn, and the second at the top left sleeve, again, easily repairable by a knitter or a good seamstress. Otherwise, there is no pronounced wear, other holes, pulls, stains or odour. This is a very nice quality sweater - soft, luxurious cashmere with attractive hand inlaid intarsia, not often seen. Sure to be noticed!
