This is a very nice quality vintage 1970s brown cotton velvet coat made in Canada by Sport Togs under the “Lou Ritchie” brand name. Lou Ritchie was a Canadian designer, who also designed for the Rainmaster brand. The fabric is of a medium weight and the coat is fully lined in a quilted acetate with polyester fill interlining - this was meant to provide some warmth and protection against the wind. The coat does up with a loop and some interior ties positioned at the waistline and cinches with a matching belt, otherwise, there are no other closures. The coat has a wide notched lapel and collar that can be worn up or down (see photos). Each cuff has a button down belt and the back of the coat has a long kick pleat vent that runs from the waist to the hemline. The coat appears to have never been used as the kick pleat is still stitched closed and the cardboard “repeat order” tag is still present.
Label: Lou Ritchie Montreal. Cardboard tag reads “Lot 0246/Model 224/Size 10/ Use for Repeats Sport Togs Inc. The ILGWU union label was in use from 1968 until 1984, but this coat probably dates to the mid-70s.
Sizing: Size 10 is indicated, but please note the following measurements, taken from the exterior, for fit - please take the thickness of the fabric into account:
Shoulders: 16” across from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 24” from the shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve inseam: 16 1/2”
Bust: 37” around, meant to hang loosely
Waist: Meant to cinch with belt
Hips: Full - meant to hang loosely
Hemline: 80” around
Length: 47”, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition with no wear, tear or stains - as mentioned, I don’t believe that this was ever used and was well cared for and stored over the years.
This is a very nice quality coat - easy to wear, classic style!
