Philip Somerville began working with the milliner Otto Lucas in the 1950s. When Otto Lucas died in a plane crash in 1971, he went out on his own to wholesale hats to high end department stores in London and New York..finally opening his own London shop in 1987.
He was one of the Queen’s milliners from the early 1980s until he retired in 2008. He also made hats for Diana, Princess of Wales, as well as for members of several European royal families. A third of his business came from hats that were bought for the races at Ascot.
He was born in 1930 and recently passed away on September 14th, 2014 at the age of 86.
