Age: late 1950s / early 1960s. It has a metal zipper, which most normally indicates a 50s period, although this is not a firm rule
Label: New York Suzy Perette Montreal. Suzy Perette was a New York based dress manufacturer that copied Parisian designs during the 1950s.
Description: This is a great looking dress made out of black cotton with horizontally applied white ribbon striping over the whole dress. There is also, in addition, black crinkled ribbon applied in between each section of six white stripes. The dress is made in a sleeveless style with one black and one white spaghetti strap on each side. The skirt of the dress has a built-in black acetate slip and the dress does up the back with a metal zipper. Please note that the dress was much too large for my mannequin and was pinned back for the photos.
Color: Black and white
Material: Cotton with rayon trim
Sizing: No size is indicated, but this is quite large - please rely on the following measurements for fit, keeping the style of the garment in mind (please measure your body or a similar garment that you might own for comparison):
Bust: 40" around
Waist: 31" around
Hips: 44" around, but meant to fall loosely
Overall length: 46", measured flat from the top of straps to the hemline
Condition: This is in very good condition with the exception of some pulls or frays to the white ribbon (see last close-up photo). This could be cleaned up for the most part with a bit of time and a sharp pair of scissors. Otherwise, this dress is in very good condition.
This is a an easy to wear example of 50s fashion as black and white geometrics are very in right now.....looks very contemporary, except the fabric and construction is much nicer than what you can buy today.
