Very early (most likely 17th c., but could also be as early as 16th c.) miniature oil on what I think is leather. The marine scene shows several ships with sails and one small boat. Superb little piece. The leather (or similar material) that it is painted on is cracked down the middle, and could also use a good cleaning (especially under the glass ... which also has flecks of what look like real gold). It is framed in a bronze "beaded" frame with tufted very worn velvet, which surrounds yet around another beaded and chased bronze inner frame. Back of frame is wood, and painting is covered with a vellum or fabric back. Glass and hanging ring are original too. I've never opened the back of this, for fear that something may fall apart. Overall measurements: 4 1/2" X 3 1/4".
