This is an absolutely divine little box, with a gilt eglomise scene that is incredibly detailed considering the demure size of the piece! It originates from France and dates towards 1850-1860.
The painted scene under glass is done entirely in gilt on a marbled (brown and white, you can see this at the top of the design) background. The design depicts a lovely lady holding a book, with two young me following her. The design is enhanced by very fine outlines in black, depicting each leaf, fold of clothes and facial details with care. The glass is set into a gilded brass mount. There is a frame of textured gilded paper around the edge of the top and bottom of each side of the box. There is a gilded metal mount at the bottom.
The bottom side is lined with green felt. The interior is lined with pink paper. The measurements are: 1 5/8” in diameter, 3/8” deep and 1/2” tall. It is in very good antique condition with no color loss to the gilt painted scene. It has been treasured over the years to survive in such wonderful condition. These delicate boxes often do not survive the passage of time.
