This exquisite pair have every element of the richness and elegance of French pieces. The heavy gilded bronze and the brilliant cobalt blue, hand painted inset medallions are simply stunning. They date from 1889-1890.
The candlesticks are very heavy, made of bronze and gilded. Every inch is ornamented. Each candlestick has the following description: The bottom platform (which stands on three bronze legs and the central medallion "foot") has a deeply scalloped "skirt". The scallops have incised patterns of half shield medallions. There is a row of circular beading above this, then a wide, smooth platform. Two garlands of flowers and leaves cascade from the central pedestal. Two arms curve outward from the central top medallion. There is a top finial of flower buds and leaves.
The medallions are hand painted on porcelain. The cobalt blue glaze of the background gives dimension to the musical and floral scenes which are painted in grey, creme and off white. The detail to the small vignettes is delicate, the use of color is subtle but effective. The medallions are set off by beaded framing which stands out 1/4" from the porcelain pieces .
The pair is in very good antique condition. There are no noted cracks or chips to the porcelain medallions. They stand solidly on the table top, they are heavy brilliantly gilded. Each measures: 9 1/2" tall, 5 1/4" wide at the base, 4" deep front to back. The large medallions measure 1 7/8" x 1: the small medallions 1 7/8" x 5/8".
We sell them as a PAIR. They are simply luxurious bougeoir, the epitome of gilded French design.
