This stunning pair is in the rarest shade of very light, almost spring green, opaline. They come from Paris and date from 1850-1860.
Opaline glass reached its peak of popularity during the reign of Napoleon III in the 1850s and 1860s. The green color is among the most prized by collectors. The thick, almost opaque glass has a high lead content influenced by 16th century Venetian milk glass.
The bottles are identical. Each have wide, rounded shoulders. The bodies have hand-painted gilt flowers and stars. The necks have been hand-painted in gilt. Each little bouchon (stopper) has a round ball which has been gilded and a tapering body which fits into the bottles. Each bottle measures: 4 1/2" tall, 2 1/4" in circumference at the bottom. The bouchons each measure 1 3/8" tall.
The remain in very good condition. There is very slight wear to the hand-painted gilt as is expected with age. There are no noticeable chips or cracks.
They are true treasures from the opulent period of Napoleon III.
