With a very large medallion of delightful spring flowers, this gilded beauty gives the viewer a breath of spring at every regard! The box dates from 1860-1880 and originates from Paris.
The center medallion is unusually large, measuring 3 3/4" x 3 3/4". The work is done in watercolor (gouache) on paper and is signed by the artist "CH Thomas. The painting is exquisite, the details extremely fine and the colors soft and radiant. The flowers of spring are represented in all their delicate beauty: tulips, camellia, daisies and mums, so lifelike you feel as if you could smell them, gently rest in their wicker basket holder.
The gilded bronze box is in a classic oval form. The outer band (1 3/4" wide) is embellished by a floating trellis of roses, leaves and a twisting ribbon. Above and below this design, a raised band frame is placed, this band is fluted with small arabesques. The lid opens with a half heart clasp. The outer edge has a twisted rope frame sitting next to a flat frame ornamented by leaves. The inner panel has a textural, mesmerizing hexagon design and the painting is framed by a corded band with pressed flower shapes.
The interior (which has been restored somewhere in the box's history) is of fine crimson velvet with a satin cord. The box measures: 1 3/4" tall, 6"x 5" across the top and 1 1/2" deep. It survives in excellent antique condition with light, usual wear to the bottom as expected with age. The painting shows absolutely no fading, their are no visible chips or cracks to the glass.
The box has a decadent, jewel-like presence. It is a superior example from the opulent period of Napoleon III.
