The combination of gilded bronze and rich oil hues of the painting, give this box a luscious texture. It originates from a Parisian estate and dates circa 1880.
It is a large dresser box, measuring 7” x 4 1/2” x 2” (tall). Every inch is delicately embellished. The base has a 1/4” ‘skirt’ which has a raised twisted ribbon frame. The wide side band (1 1/2”) has a beautiful raised design of scrolls, acanthus leaves and flowers on a pointelle background. The lid has a matching twisted ribbon ‘skirt’ with an extended curved handle. The inner filed of the lid is filled by flowers, scrolls and arabesques.
The painting is framed by a 1/4” band which is half smooth and half with a repeating leaf pattern. The landscape is done in oils. It depicts a pastoral scene with a small castle on the hill, forests and billowing clouds. The painting is not signed.
The interior (which has been refitted somewhere in the box’s history) is of burgundy damask. The interior is 1 3/8” deep. The underneath bottom is flat. It is in very good antique condition. The gilded bronze still holds the original patina, the painting is bright and fresh. The lid opens and closes properly.
It is an unusual example.
