This very rare cape buckle is French and from the first half of the nineteenth century. Both parts test as 800-900 silver quality and feature ‘mascarons’ or stylised faces.
Each half of the buckle measures 1” (2.5cms) by 13/16” (2cms). Together they weigh 9.1 grams.
The twin images feature a raised face with clear features. Wisps of hair escape from either side. Above the face is a diadem and then three feather plumes. Beneath the face is a pretty scalloped collar.
There are four tiny holes on each element for sewing to the cape. They have a smooth ,silver rim. On one side is a ring and on the other a clip.
On the side with the ring is a worn hallmark which could be the crab for 800-900 silver quality.
The backs are smooth silver.
This very rare and attractive piece is in fine antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
