This lovely, silver long guard chain is French. It bears French crab hallmark for 800-900 quality silver. I believe it dates to circa 1900. This chain has a pretty, silver clip designed to keep the chains together in the length required.
In Victorian times a guard chain was used to carry a muff, lorgnette or watch. Today it makes a fabulous double necklace to which you could add an antique locket or pendant if desired.
The chain measures 54½" (140cms) long and weighs 18.2 grams with the clip.
The chain is very pretty. There are 10mm plain elongated oval links. Between them are groups of five, delicately engraved small, round links The links are 1- 2mms wide. At one end is a solid ring clasp. The hallmark is on the attached ring.
The charming, silver clip is pierced with a really delightful floral motif , lightly gold washed, in the centre. The surround starts as a stalk and flows around with fine engraving. It bears a boar’s head hallmark for 800-900 silver quality.
This beautiful and most versatile chain, with its charming clip, is in fine antique condition. It comes to you in a gift box.
