This really charming, silver pill or trinket box is French and bears the Minerva’s Head hallmark. It is difficult to tell by looking at it whether it is first or second quality silver. However I have acid tested it and it is definitely sterling quality. The theme is music and I am dating it to circa 1890-1900.
It measures 1 and 9/16” (4cms) across the base, by 7/8” (1.7cms) tall. It weighs 22.8 grams.
On the top is a very fine , raised image of musical instruments, including pipes and a tambourine. Around them are oak leaves and an unfurled ribbon. The image is finished with raised lines and fine beading. The side also has two lines of beading.
The box opens easily on its hinge. The interior has a light gold wash. It closes firmly. The base is plain silver.
Minerva’s head appears in two places on the rims.
This rare and very lovely piece, in excellent antique condition, would make a lovely gift for a musical person. It will arrive in a gift box.
