This very elegant guard chain is French. It looks just like solid gold with an antique look. However I believe it is made of ‘pomponne’ which is the French equivalent of the English pinchbeck. In other words this is an alloy of base metals made to look like gold. I reckon its age is circa 1890- 1900.
In Victorian times a guard chain was used to carry a muff, lorgnette or watch. Today it makes a fabulous double necklace to which you could add an antique locket or pendant if desired.
The chain measures 60” (151cms) long. The links measure 1mm wide. It weighs 16.1 grams
The links are round and placed alternately to catch the light. A dog nose clip is attached. The overall look is shiny and sinuous.
This beautiful guard chain is in fine antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box
