This is one of the heaviest and most substantial, long guard chains that I have ever offered. This real beauty is French, and bears a hallmark for 800-900 quality silver. I am dating this piece to circa 1890 - 1900.
In Victorian and Edwardian times a guard chain was used to carry a muff, lorgnette or watch. Today it makes a fabulous double necklace to which you could add an antique locket or pendant if desired.
This one measures 54” (136cms) long. The links are 10mm by 5mms.. It weighs a massive 37.1 grams.
This fabulous guard chain has alternating , twisted links which catch the light. One is finely line engraved and the other has a twisted diamond effect. At one end is a large ring clasp which could be used to secure the chain as a double necklace of opera length. On the attaching ring is a slightly worn boar’s head hallmark for 800-900 silver quality.
I have never seen this style of chain before It is in wonderful antique condition with an attractive patina of age. It will arrive in a gift box.
