This charming , Art Deco small picture features a fairy playing a pipe. What makes it special is that part of the picture is inlaid with butterfly wing. The use of butterfly wing in jewellery and other small was first exhibited at the British Exhibition in 1924. It set off a worldwide craze which endured until the late 30’s.
The picture in its wooden frame measures 4” (10.2cms) by 3” (7.5cms).
The wooden back has a stand and also a ring for hanging on the wall. There is a slightly torn label and we can read ‘In London’ so I suspect Made in London.
The prettily painted fairy has orange hair and white face and legs. Her skirt is blue and brown butterfly wing. Her wings are beige with orange painted detailing. At top right is another sliver of butterfly wing with touches of luminous turquoise amongst black tree trunks and a white moon. The background is dramatic black, accented with a couple of orange and green plants at the base.
This very delightful and unusual piece, shows slight signs of age as you might expect from a piece of around 90 years old. It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
