This lovely, French pin was made by the company, Bressans, in the eastern French city of Bourg en Bresse. Bressans has been making beautiful enamel jewellery since 1850. They work with French 800-900 silver and 18 carat gold. The designs are hand crafted to a unique method. .I am dating this piece to circa 1890-1900.
The square shaped pin is 1¼” (3.2cms) across. It weighs 6.9 grams.
This charming pin may be of modest size but it has huge impact. Pillow shaped with flat silver ball edging, The style is typical of a 19th century piece.
The background is translucent, ruby red enamel with flashes of lighter red. It is possible that the backing is foiled to create this effect. In the centre is a white enamel cross with ‘jewels’ of translucent green enamel. Around it is a superb decoration in 18 carat gold , with scrolls and tiny gold floral motifs.. The enamel is bezel set in silver.
The back is plain silver with a typically French trombone style clasp. On the back is a crab mark for 800-900 silver quality. There is a further very tiny crab on the pin.
There is a tiny black dot on the white enamel which possibly happened during manufacture as there is no enamel loss.
This delightful pin will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
