This most beautiful sterling silver and enamel compact bears full English hallmarks for the year 1941. The maker is Broadway & Co.
The octagonal compact measures 2 and 5/8” (6.5cms) each way and weighs 50.7 grams.
The front has the most wonderful, turquoise guilloché enamelling. The engine turned lines from beneath the enamel radiate outward in a shimmering , sunburst design. The edges have a fine beaded effect
The compact opens and closes easily . Inside the mirror is perfectly intact. The well carries the maker’s mark ‘B&Co’ for Broadway & Co. There follow the hallmarks – the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter ‘R’ for1941 – so nearly 80 years old.
The reverse has a textured design typical of the period with a monogram. The date is at the height of World War 11 so maybe a serviceman gave it to his sweetheart. Who knows what stories it could tell!
This lovely compact is in fine vintage condition. All the enamel is intact with just a few signs of age on the silver. The white marks yu can see on the back are exaggerated in the photo. It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
