This lovely medal was created by the acclaimed engraver, Oscar Roty, circa 1900. It is a fire fighter’s medal. It is marked for 800-900 silver quality.
Roty (1846-1911) was particularly known for his engraving of ‘La Semeuse’ – the Sower which appeared on French coins and stamps.
It measures 1 and 1/16” (2.7cms) across and weighs 9,6 grams.
On the front is a really beautiful image of Marianne, symbol of France. She has a strong profile and upswept hair with a crown of laurel leaves. Around the edge is inscribed in French ‘Republique Française’.
At the base is the signature ‘O Roty’ . The edge is inscribed ‘argent’ for silver.
At the top is a small rounded ring and a large circular bail for hanging.
On the reverse is a seated Marianne about to write on a tablet. It is engraved ‘Ministère de l’Intérieur’ , the equivalent of Home Office, and then ‘Sapeurs Pompiers’ for fire fighters. It is dated ‘1900.
This most fascinating and beautiful medal/pendant is in fine condition with only slight signs of age. It will arrive in a gift box.
