This charming, Art Nouveau circa 1900 ‘porte louis’ or coin holder came from me from France. It is silver plated on brass with a partially gilded interior.
It measures 2 ½” (6.5cms) long, including the knob, by 1¼” (3.2cms) across.
The raised motifs front and back are thistles, a favourite Art Nouveau motif, At the top is a knob which is depressed to open the holder. There is a large ring at the top which a gentleman might have hung from his watch chain.
It springs open to reveal two compartments on springs to enable a number of coins to be stacked up.
There is a maker’s mark and the words ‘Extra Blanc’ (Extra White). It closes with a click.
The exterior is in great condition but there are some signs of age and use inside. It will arrive in a gift box.
