This fascinating and very rare anointing spoon tests as sterling silver gilt. It is a replica of the one used at the coronation of King Edward V11 in 1903. I am dating it to circa 1901-1903. It sits in its fitted box for Pierce and Sons Goldsmiths Leeds Huddersfield and Leicester. There is a crown signifying that this company held the Royal Warrant.

Pierce & Sons was founded in 1887 in Grantham. In 1883 it expanded to branches in Leicester , Huddersfield and Leeds. In 1911 it also expanded to York but there is no reference to this on the lid inscription which helps with the dating.

Helpfully there is a paper in the box which says ‘ Copy of the Coronation Spoon used for the anointing of King Edward 1 (1272) and successive Sovereigns of Great Britain and to be used for the coronation of King Edward V11.’ The reverse carries an image of the spoon.

The spoon is 4 and 3/8” (11cms) long. It is highly decorated , including the bowl. Over the bowl appears to be a tiny bird or animal head The reverse has different designs and the back of the bowl is plain.

It sits in its fitted faded green velvet box. When you remove the spoon you can see the original colour. The padded green silk lid is printed in gold with the silversmith’s details.

The box is covered in dark brown leather with gold tooling on the top. It closes firmly .

The spoon itself is in excellent antique condition, The box shows small signs of wear as you might expect.

I have had this piece in my collection for 12 years as I found it so charming and historic. I think now is the time to pass it on. It will arrive very carefully protected.
