This charming, chain mail purse is French from the Art Nouveau period circa 1900. It bears French boar’s head hallmarks for 800-900 silver quality. Originally it would have hung from a lady’s chatelaine belt. Today it makes a delightful accessory and could be used as a pendant
The purse measures 2 ¾” (7cms) long, including the clasp, and 2 and 5/8” (6.6cms) across the widest part of the frame. It weighs 44.8 grams so is very substantial.
The pierced, decorative frame has a wonderful , raised design on each side and also a ring for attaching to a chain. Unusually the ring, the clasp and the interior division are in rose gold, possibly silver gilt.
The art nouveau design is of rose buds with swirling leaves, all with delicate engravings.
The clasp opens and closes easily with a click. There are boar’s heads on either side.
The mesh is in excellent condition with no holes.
This exquisite purse is in fine antique condition and so useful for carrying a few coins, especially when attending a special function. It comes to you tissue wrapped in a gift box.
