Georgian Cut Steel Tassel Earrings - Hooks

This is a pair of exquisite Late Georgian, cut steel, trassel earrings. They have hooks for pierced ears.

I have fallen in love with cut steel, an old jewellery process which dates back to at least the sixteenth century and became the height of fashion in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was designed to imitate the glitter of diamonds in candle light.

The drop earrings measure 2 and 5/8” (6.7cms) long from the top of the hook.. Together they weigh 8.5 grams.

The shepherd’s hooks are attached to a 4mm steel ball and then a length of chain. Two tiny rings join it to the fluted conical cap with a faceted bead at the top. From this hang four strands of twisted, glittering, tiny cut steel beads.

These elegant earrings swing beautifully on the ear. The steels are in wonderful condition with no rust. Everything appears to be original. I purchased them many years ago for my personal collection but now I have decided to part with them as I have others.
