These rare and beautiful Victorian Whitby Jet drop earrings have 9 carat gold hooks (tested) for pierced ears. They are carved with ferns, a popular Victorian symbol of humility and sincerity. I am dating these earrings to 1870-1880.
Unlike most gemstones, Whitby Jet is organic and is naturally formed from fossilised wood. The pressure of the water and sediment over millions of years compacts the wood and slowly transforms it into what we know as Whitby Jet stone today.
The colour of Whitby Jet is truly unique, boasting a deep blackness so intense that the expression ‘jet black’ or ‘as black as jet’ derives from the colour of the stone. It has a smooth and very lightweight appeal making it an excellent choice for jewellery.
These earrings are 2 and 7/8” (4.7cms) long from the top of the hooks. They measure ¾” (2cms) across the widest part.
The hooks are attached to rings which hold the top bails. The fronts are elegantly carved with ferns. They are set against a characteristically background. The backs are plain and shiny.
In excellent condition these Whitby jet earrings are sure to please . They will arrive in a gift box
