This very unusual, French locket dates to the late nineteenth century. It is hallmarked for 800-900 silver quality with an 18 carat gold overlay and a finely carved carnelian agate. I am pretty sure that it was a memorial piece and I will explain more later.
It measures 1 and 1/8” 2.8cms) across and weighs 13.2 grams.
On the front, in the centre, is a roundel of carnelian, carved with the monogram ‘MD’. These may be the initials of the departed. It has a beaded surround. The outer edge is finished with lovely, gold curlicues.
The locket opens from the side. On the left you can see the translucent side of the agate. On the other side is a glassed compartment with a delicately engraved surround. I have not opened it but it looks like it contains strands of hair. The rim carries a pair of boar’s heads for 800-900 silver.
At the top is a ring with the crab mark also for 800-900 silver quality. There is also a bail for a chain.
The locket closes firmly.
The reverse is decorated with a swirling motif and a Greek key design around the edge.
In excellent antique condition, this rare and beautiful locket will arrive in a gift box.
