This most attractive, Georgian pill or snuff box bears full English hallmarks for the year 1818. It bears the maker’s mark for T Timpson & Son. I suspect that it was once a vinaigrette but there is no grille now.
It measures 1 and 9/16” (4cms) by 1 and 1/16” (2.8cms), It is 10mms deep and weighs 15.6 grams.
Around the edges top and bottom is an elaborate, raised design of flowers . In the central rectangle is and engraved basket overflowing with flowers and leaves. On the front is what was originally a blank for a monogram. It appears to bear some lightly engraved , Roman numerals. One of the side edges has vertical lines but the other is plain. The reverse is similar but without an oval.
It opens easily via tabs at the front. The interior is richly gilded. The lid is inscribed with the head of George 111, the maker’s mark ‘S&S’ and the lion passant for sterling silver. The interior bears the anchor mark or the Birmingham assay office, ‘S&S’ and the date letter ‘U’ for 1818.
In fine antique condition , this charming box is sure to please. It will arrive in a gift box.
