This Victorian Vesta case or match safe bears full English, sterling hallmarks for the year 1890.
It measures 2” (5cms) by 1½” (3.8cms). It weighs 27.1 grams.
In the repoussé style it has a fabulous scrolling and swirling design on each corner, front and back. There is a band across it and this has been lightly engraved with the name ‘H Luckes ‘ on one side and the initials ‘H.L’ on the other.
It opens easily at the top and bears the hallmarks – the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the date letter ‘q’ for 1890 and finally the lion passant for sterling silver. It closes with a snap.
At the base is a striking plate for matches.
There is a tiny gap on one side at the top, much magnified in my photo, but I’m sure this can be rectified. Otherwise it is fine antique condition . This charming vesta is sure to please. It will arrive in a gift box.
