This exquisite, silver vesta or match safe case is from the Art Nouveau period circa 1900. I have tested it and believe it to be heavily silver plated. There is no sign of any wear to the silver. It is European in origin in the French style but I cannot be sure of its origin.
The vesta measures 1 and 7/8” (4.7cms) by 1 and 3/8” (3.3cms). It weighs 20.7 grams.
The high Art Nouveau, raised design is breathtakingly beautiful and the same on both sides. On the left is a delightfully formed and engraved iris. On the right is a delicately engraved dragonfly with a curved tail, mirroring the flower’s stem.
At the base is a striking plate for matches.
The vesta opens easily on its hinge and you will note that the interior has the remains of a gold wash. On the rim is a maker’s mark which I am unable to identify.
This most stunning piece is in excellent antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
