This charming, silver vesta or match safe case is from the Art Nouveau period circa 1895-1900. It is marked for 800 quality silver with indistinguishable hallmarks. I think it may be a French import from Germany which had its own wonderful silversmiths.
The vesta measures 2¼” (5.7cms) by 1½” (3.7cms). It weighs 24.9grams.
Within a rectangular frame the front and back of the vesta are embellished with raised ,sinuous, organic lines with a trailing spray of small leaves. There are other , wavy leaves which look like stylised acanthus. All the details are finely engraved and some overlap the edges of the frame in typical , Art Nouveau style. There is a blank space at the base intended for a monogram. It has a ring on the side for hanging from a watch chain or chatelaine.
The vesta opens easily and closes firmly. The upper edge bears the marks referred to above.
At the base is a striking plate for matches.
This most exquisite piece is in excellent antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
