This most attractive, circa 1900, agate and silver vesta case bears the mark of Joseph Cook and Son. I acquired this piece as silver plated and it bears no hallmarks. However I have tested it as sterling. It is either solid silver or very thickly plated. There are no signs of wear to the silver. So my price reflects the slight uncertainty about this piece.
The match safe measures 1 and 13/16” (4.6cms) by 1¼” (3.3cms). It weighs 23.3 grams.
The front is finely chased and inlaid with differently coloured agates. Between silver bands are triangles of carnelian agate and between them are slivers of blue lace and onyx agates.
The back is plain.
The vesta opens easily on its hinge. On the rim Is the mark ’JC &S’. Joseph Cook was based in Birmingham but made various items for the Scottish market. It closes with a firm click and on the top is a small ring.
At the base is a striking panel for matches.
This fabulous piece is in fine antique condition apart from a tiny defect on the black onyx. It could easily be blacked over. It will arrive in a gift box.
