This delightful, chain mail purse is French from the Art Nouveau period circa 1900. It bears French boar’s head hallmarks for 800-900 silver quality.Originally it would have hung from a lady’s chatelaine belt. Today it makes a charming accessory.
The purse measures 3” (6.7cms) long, including the clasp, and also 3” (6.7cms) wide across the top of the frame. It weighs 62.9 grams so is quite substantial.
The decorative frame has a wonderful , repoussé design replicated on the reverse which also has a ring for attaching to a chain. At the centre is a griffin, half lion half eagle, which was a popular Art Nouveau motif. All around it and down the sides are leafy swirls.
The clasp opens and closes easily. Inside the purse there are two compartments. There are pairs of boar’s head hallmarks on each side of the clasp.
This exquisite purse is in excellent antique condition and so useful for carrying coins, especially when attending a special function. I have only given it a light polish so it retains its original patina. It comes to you tissue wrapped in a gift box.
