This delightful, Victorian silver locket is unmarked, as many were, but tests to sterling silver.
The oval locket measures 2¼” (5.7cms) long, including the bail, and 1 and 3/8” (3.5cms) across. It weighs 14.5 grams.
The locket front reflects the British aesthetic movement inspired by Japanese art. A raised oval contains an exquisite frame for the images. A bird ,probably a swallow, swoops down towards the water. There are reeds and a bamboo tree. The upper area is cross hatched. There is delicate patterning around the lower edge which is finished with indentations.
At the top is a ring and a substantial bail.
The locket opens easily on the right hand side. The interior is empty and has darkened but there is a rim on the right side. The locket closes firmly with a soft click.
Within the same style of frame, the back is lavishly decorated with engraved ferns. At the base is a small blank shield for a monogram. You could quite easily wear the locket on this side if you prefer.
This most beautiful and unusual Victorian locket is in excellent antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
