This quite delightful Victorian Scottish agate bracelet dates to circa 1880. It is mounted on unmarked sterling silver (tested).
Queen Victoria’s acquisition of Balmoral Castle in Scotland in 1848 sparked a fashion for all things Scottish. Out of the romantic Scottish Highlands came a wide variety of beautiful jewellery in mostly silver but also gold ornamented with a variety of coloured agates , quartz and amethysts. Not only are these pieces truly beautiful but they are also very wearable with today’s fashions.
This bracelet measures approximately 7” (17.5cms) long and is 9/16“ (1.4cms) wide. It weighs 29.1grams .
The bracelet has four, square, faceted agates set on delicately engraved, silver mounts. Between them are pairs of cylindrical agates with straight sides and engraved silver caps. All are joined with a small length of chain and there is a heart shaped clasp.
The earthy colours of the square agates range from apricot , through coffee to darkest brown. All have natural striations. The pairs of cylinders are in lovely earthy colours of agates with striations and mottled granite.
The heart clasp measures 14mms across the widest part. One side is infilled with brown ,moss agate. The other side has a rock crystal compartment containing a curled lock of hair.
At each end of the bracelet are hooks to which the clasp is attached. There is also a safety chain.
I have gone over this bracelet carefully with my loupe and I can’t find anything to spoil your pleasure in this unique and beautiful bracelet
It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
