This exquisite Victorian Scottish agate bow pin dates to circa 1860-1870. It is mounted on unmarked sterling silver (tested).

Queen Victoria’s acquisition of Balmoral Castel in Scotland in 1848 sparked a fashion for all things Scottish. Out of the romantic Scottish Highlands came a wide variety of beautiful jewellery in mostly silver, but also gold, ornamented with a variety of coloured agates , quartz, citrines and amethysts. Agate jewellery became a Victorian passion. Not only are these pieces truly beautiful but they are also very wearable with today’s fashions.

The bow knot was a popular motif at the time but now quite hard to find. This one measures 1 and 9/16” (4cms) across the top and 1” (2.5cms) down the centre. It weighs 10.5 grams.

The silver bow is inlaid with contrasting Scottish agates and hardstones. Amongst these are attractive blue lace agates from Montrose and lovely bloodstone, dark green with red specks.

This very wearable and most beautiful pin is in fine antique condition. It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
