These exquisite Victorian cut steel earrings have 9 carat gold hooks (tested). I am dating them to circa 1860.
I have recently become fascinated by cut steel, an old jewellery process which dates back to at least the sixteenth century and became the height of fashion in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was designed to imitate the glitter of diamonds in candle light and quite honestly no other costume jewel performs this as well.
The drop earrings measure 1 and 7/8” (4.3cms) long from the top of the hook. They are 13/16” (2cms) across the widest part . Together they weigh 6.5 grams.
The gold shepherd’s hooks are attached to an octagonal shape set with tiny 1mm glittering pastes. From this hangs an attractive bell flower with a larger paste in the centre to create a focal point. Finally there is a delicate spay of little leaves.
The reverse is neatly finished and you can see the hammered backs of the tiny steels.
Being articulated in three places these beautiful earrings swing beautifully on the ear. The steels are in wonderful condition with no rust.
These stunning and very wearable, antique earrings will arrive in a gift box.
