This stunning , 900 silver butterfly pin dates to the Art Nouveau period circa 1900-1910. It was made in Germany and is similar to items made by the German company, Meyle and Mayer but I do not believe it is theirs. The colours are typical of the era.
It measures 2 and 7/16” (6.2cms) across the wingspan and weighs 15.6 grams.
The body is glittering clear pastes and there are two little red eyes. The delicately curved wings are enamelled in shades of pale green and lilac. This colour combination is reminiscent of jewellery made for the Suffragette period - so just maybe it could have been made for export to the UK. Beneath the enamel is fine line detailing which creates a lovely shimmer and there are delicate black accents.
The back is smoothly finished with a fine gold wash. It is marked ‘900’ for the silver quality and has an old style c clip.
In excellent antique condition, this exceptional and very beautiful butterfly will arrive in a gift box.
