This stunning French pin was made by the company, Bressans, in the eastern French city of Bourg en Bresse. Bressans has been making beautiful enamel jewellery since 1850. They work with French 800-900 quality silver with 18 carat gold. The designs are hand crafted to a unique method . This piece is early, dating to the second half of the nineteenth century.
The pin measures 2” (5cms) by 9/16” (1.5cms) and it weighs 7,7 grams.
This very rare and unusual pin is hallmarked for silver but has a generous gold overlay. It consists of two lines of ruby set motifs set at an angle. All around are the tiny gold balls typical of Victorian jewellery.
The top line of seven motifs have a luminous turquoise enamel background. In the centre is a white enamel flower with tiny translucent enamel droplets. These are topped with claw set, faceted rubies. The second line of motifs are similar except that the background is black and the translucent droplets are green.
On the gold overlaid back is smoothly finished. The old style c clip bears the French crab mark for 800-900 silver quality and a maker’s mark.
This delightful pin is in excellent antique condition with all the enamel intact.
These Bressans pieces are very rare and so I was pleased to find this beauty. It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
