This delightful, Victorian silver locket is unmarked, as many were, but tests to sterling silver.
The oval locket measures 1 and 11/16” (4.3cms) long, including the tiny ring, and 1¼” (3.2cms) across. It weighs 16.8 grams,
The locket front reflects the British aesthetic movement inspired by Japanese art. Within an oval frame is an exquisitely engraved image of a bird and foliage. Below it is what looks like the handle of an oriental fan and on either side is fine line detail. Across the base is a curling band and an area of fine, curving lines. Around the edge is a beaded finish and then a typically Victorian, indented edging.
At the top is a ring and a bail.
The locket opens easily on the right hand side. The interior is lined with red paper and both rims and covers are intact. On one rim is the English lion passant for sterling silver The locket closes firmly with a soft click.
The back is lavishly decorated with engraved ivy leaves. There is a diamond shaped motif in the centre. It is engraved with fine squares and dots. You could quite easily wear the locket on this side if you prefer.
This most beautiful and unusual Victorian locket is in excellent antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
