This painting is a depiction of the Madonna and Child titled “Madona con Olive.” The significance of the olives harkens back to the 14th Century when a church in Murat, France was struck by lighting and burned to the ground. The church’s cross made of olive wood was all that survived, thus the reference to Mary.
Nicolo Barabino was born in Florence and was active there and in Genoa. His initial studies were at Genovese Academia di Belle Arti under Guiseppe Isola. He specialized in frescoes, religious subjects and portraiture. He was celebrated for his delicately rendered Madonna and Child paintings which were produced as a series at the time.
The panel measures 4 ½” by 6” and 13” by 11 ½” in the giltwood, deep cove frame which features foliate ornamentation on the outer margin and inner liner. The paint surface is in a stable condition and the frame shows some losses to the very outer rim of the frame. There is a signature of the bottom right corner, but it is indistinct.
