This oil on canvas painting depicts French ships of the line heading out to see. The ship, from the Napoleonic Period in the foreground, is under full sail and shows all the correct details in terms of rigging and sails. It is armed with 40 guns on the spar deck and the gun deck. Sailors can be seen going about their duties on the stern. The painting offers a realistic perspective of tall ships heading out towards the horizon. James Northon, an English painter, was active in the 19c. His signature can be found on the lower right corner.
The painting measures 18 ½” (48cm) by 25” (63.5 cm) to sight and 25” (63.5 cm) by 31” (78.74 cm) in the gilt composition period frame. The painting has several restoration patches as can be seen on the verso. The frame shows several small losses on the outer margin due to age and use. The paint surface is in excellent, stable condition and is room-ready to hang.
