This unusual Napoleon III box has many special features: the top has an oval medallion with an image of Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty and model for the statue of Liberty. The box has metal bands and top corners as well as a metal escutcheon. The box was found in France and comes with a working key. The box has had a life and is showing several signs of it: the lacquer has had several breaks and splits, some of them repaired. One of the metal bands has come slightly loose with the brads still present but not snug to the underlying box. There may have been metal banding on the sides,(like in the front and back) but it is missing. These are mostly cosmetic issues consistent with age and use. The box is structurally sound and stunning in its original condition. The inside and bottom have newer paper.
Measurements are: 7 3/4" by 5" and 5 3/4" tall.
