Here is a very well composed oil of a view of very large, old oak tree. The canopy extends over the whole work. We are drawn up the stone path to the mission and the view of the valley is framed by the massive branches. The dark foreground and dappled shade play off the light filled view in the background.
The work measures to sight 17 ½” by 22 ½” and 22 ½” by 27 ½” in the gilt, sold wood period frame and the period being first half 20th Century. The canvas has been laid onto the board and the paint layer is in fine shape. The canvas does show some minor buckling consistent with age. The frame has a loss on the inner liner plus abrasions to the outer rim which are out of sight view. The artist’s signature can be found on the lower right corner.
