This antique French specimen box is going to take some describing. we think it was the pet project of an eboniste who was trying out various techniques and designs. The box has front back and sides of King wood veneer, inlaid on the corners and the edges of both the top and bottom with dark wood, satin and king wood veneer. The top and bottom are inlaid as follows: bands of chevron shaped inlays around a rectangular center also inlaid with the same woods an a brown material flecked with white. The initials T S are also in white. The sides of the box have an oval satin wood inlay. The bottom has more inlays: a checker board pattern surrounded with more brown flecked material and square inlays in the corners. The escutcheon is brass. The box is lined in green velvet. The lock does work, but we did not have a working key. Condition is very good for its age: there is no missing inlays and minimal wear to the wood surfaces.
Measurements are: 5 7/8" by 4 1/4" and 3 1/8" tall.
