This work is a view of three faces. Often, when first viewing the work the viewers don’t see the actual representation until they turn their heads slightly or study it more closely, like when studying a metamorphic piece. When one doesn’t see the profiles then one views it as a complete abstraction. In reality it shows a deft use of mixed media technique by applying layers of textured, shards of paper to form the contours of the faces. The colors of the paper shards are muted; light grey, green and linen. The work would seem to stem from late mid-20th century and the artist and the title of the work are unknown.
The paper has been applied to an artist’s board which measures 14” by 18”. The work has been framed in a contemporary, solid wood maple frame/shadow box. The work is recessed so it doesn’t come into contact with the protective glass.
