From the atelier of F.W. Papke Vienna Austria comes this leather embossed glove box with key. The lis features a hand painted cartouche of a lady and a rainbow. The box is lined with gold green silk and has a functioning key. The hardware of this box is very solid and in remarkable condition. The box has a beautiful patina and is in overall very good condition. There are some signs of age: the cartouche painting sows some chips and craquelure and there is a dull spot on one side of the lid as well as some faint signs of use. The inside lining also shows a few small specks.
The box is marked F.W. Papke. Papke was a leading manufacturer of gentleman’s leather goods in the Austrian Royals era. Felix W. Papke was the son of Karl Papke who established the shop in1841. Papke won medals at the 1894 world exhibition in Paris and the exhibition in Antwerp also in 1894.
Measurements are: 12 ¼” by 4 ¼” and 3” tall.
